Business architecture workshop
- 4 or 8 hours half-day or full-day format
- a common language business and IT at one table
- 6–12 people ideal group size
A full capability map takes weeks. Often, though, what you need first is just a common starting point: a half or full day when the people involved sit at one table and sketch together what the business is made of, and where the stakes are highest.
That is exactly what the workshop gives. By the end of the day a common language and a shared picture emerge, with a few marked next steps. If deeper work is needed afterwards, this is the best way into it; if not, it delivers clarity on its own.
How the day runs
The backbone of the day is mapping together: the outline of the capabilities goes up on the wall, and everyone sees the same picture. The four-hour format focuses on one area; the eight-hour one covers wider ground.
When do you need us?
No shared picture of the capabilities
Everyone has a different understanding of how the business is put together, and discussions repeat themselves because there is no common basis.
A big decision is coming, fast
You need a common starting point, but there is no time for a month-long assessment.
Business and IT talk past each other
They talk about the same thing yet do not understand each other, because there is no common language for capabilities.
Our process
Warm-up
We briefly clarify the goal and today's situation: what you want to reach by the end of the day.
Joint mapping
Together we sketch the first draft of the business capabilities and mark which processes, systems, and owners belong to each one.
Focus
We mark where the stakes are highest: which capabilities present the greatest difficulties, and which the greatest opportunities.
Next steps
To close the day, we capture the few steps worth taking further.
Let's see what this would give you.

Frequently asked questions
Do we need material in advance?
No. Whatever exists is useful, but the workshop builds on the participants' knowledge: the picture comes together from the discussion.
What happens afterwards?
If a deeper picture is needed, the Business capability map is the natural continuation. The workshop is its fast, low-cost precursor.
How many people should take part, and who?
It works best with six to twelve people: at that size everyone still gets a turn. Representatives of the business areas and IT should sit at the same table, with at least one decision-maker among them. The workshop is an on-site format, working on a shared wall; it can be run online, but the in-person format works better.
What do we get after the workshop?
We send the picture drawn during the workshop and the agreed steps in an organised form within a few working days. It is not a long study, but a few pages that can be taken to the decision-makers.
How we can work together
Fix Scope
Scope and fee are agreed together at the start. For well-defined work this is the most predictable form; the business capability map, for example, typically runs this way.
Time & Material
Effort-based billing with a flexible scope. It works best when the task takes shape along the way and quick changes of direction matter.
Architect as a Service
An ongoing arrangement: architect capacity without hiring a full-time specialist. It can be fixed-price and predictable, or ad-hoc involvement; it scales up or down as needs change.
